Scripts are now included in JAWS 10.0.1139 and later to enhance the experience of using the Webinar conference software. If you are using JAWS 10.0.1139 or later you do not need to install the scripts. As one example, the scripts take care of silencing progress bar announcements for JAWS users when a moderator is talking, and also give better feedback when navigating in the conference room. Only choose this link to download a set of script files for JAWS prior to 10.0.1139. The script files should be unzipped to your user settings folder. Here's how to get to your user settings folder easily:

  1. Press the WINDOWS Key to open the Start Menu.
  2. Move to and open the JAWS program group.
  3. Choose Explore JAWS.
  4. Choose Explore My Settings.

JAWS and MAGic Reading Commands and Cursors Used by JAWS

This is a core concept Webinar. It should be taken by anyone who is interested in learning to use JAWS® screen reading software for reading, work, or for accessibility testing purposes.

Reading the screen is done by pressing keys on the numeric keypad, or NUM PAD, sometimes in combination with other keys on the keyboard. When JAWS is loaded, the NUM LOCK is turned off, so that the keys represent movement keys, such as left arrow, right arrow, page up, and so on. Learn to read by character, word, line, sentence, paragraph, and more. MAGic® screen magnification software uses the same reading commands as JAWS, so learning the keyboard commands for one product provides a seamless transition to the other.

One of the key concepts of how JAWS works relates to the multiple cursor system that has been developed. Cursors discussed in this Webinar include the PC cursor, JAWS (mouse pointer) cursor, and the Virtual cursor.

The PC cursor is used for navigation and follows the focus of the system. The PC cursor is active when JAWS is first started, but if you switch to another cursor, you can press NUM PAD PLUS to make the PC cursor active again.

At other times the JAWS cursor takes over to perform actions that would normally be done using the mouse. The JAWS cursor is the mouse pointer. It can go places where the PC cursor cannot, for example, to the title bar at the top of many Windows® applications. The JAWS cursor can also be used to simulate clicking of mouse buttons.

Text in a Web page is very much like the static text in a Windows status message. The PC cursor cannot move to this text, as there is no insertion point. The JAWS cursor can access this text, but this is not the most efficient way to access larger documents such as those often found on the World Wide Web. When using Internet Explorer® (or programs that tie into the core components of Internet Explorer), or Adobe® Reader® files, JAWS provides the Virtual PC cursor to simulate an insertion point. This provides you the same functionality as that found in any word processing document. Text can be read by character, word, line, sentence, or paragraph, and text can be selected and copied to the Windows clipboard.

A voice profile is a collection of different speech settings such as rate, pitch, language, punctuation levels, and other speech options that have been saved as a group with a specific name. For example, you could create a "leisure reading" profile with a nice sounding RealSpeak™ Solo Direct voice that has a slower speed and that speaks no punctuation. You could create a "Proofreading" profile that checks for all punctuation. You could create a Spanish (or other language) profile to switch quickly and easily to have text that is written in another language pronounced correctly when you are reading it. You can instantly switch between existing voice profiles by using a single keystroke.

Learn to create voice profiles that switch to a different synthesizer, change punctuation, change voices for different cursors, and even switch to a different language.

What Are JAWS and MAGic Scripts? Basics of Scripting

Every time you start JAWS or MAGic, a group of default settings or configuration files is loaded. Included in this group of files is the default script file, default.jsb, which contains all of the functionality JAWS and MAGic need to access and speak information within the Windows operating system and Windows-based programs.

Each time you press a keystroke, JAWS and MAGic perform a series of steps to determine if the keystroke is associated with a script, is a keystroke that activates an action within the program you are using, or does not do anything.

In this one hour Webinar, you will learn the definition of a script and function, the differences between scripts and functions, how JAWS and MAGic process scripts and functions and more.



Research It for the Everyday JAWS User

Research It is a new feature that provides quick access to information while also making it easy to return to your primary task. Use just a few keystrokes to look up information and display salient data in the Virtual Viewer. When you have finished researching, press another keystroke to return to the task you were performing before the research started. All that is required to use Research It is JAWS 11 and an Internet connection.

In this Webinar we explore how to use Research It. We go through several examples together. This is for helping you learn how to use Research It. We will not discuss how to create custom rules or lookup modules.



Virtual Ribbon Menus - New in JAWS 12

The ribbons in Microsoft Office applications and Windows 7 create an accessibility challenge due to inconsistent navigation between various groups and items. For example, when you enter the Lower Ribbon and press the ARROW keys to move between items in a group, you can skip items and unexpectedly move into another group. Pressing TAB gives no indication that you have left one group and entered another. Using first letter navigation to find items can be difficult and frustrating. Finally, because of a group’s layout, you do not know if you should navigate up, down, left, or right to select an item.

The new Virtual Ribbon Menus provide the perfect solution to navigational issues that exist in the ribbons for keyboard users. Virtual Ribbon Menus provide users with predictable navigation, with the same feel and sounds of traditional menus. This makes navigating ribbons much easier and more consistent when using the keyboard with JAWS and MAGic.

JAWS Settings Center is a new feature that allows you to quickly configure and globally apply JAWS settings, or configure and apply settings for a specific application. It consolidates all options into one convenient dialog box. It includes a Search edit box, which provides an extremely fast way to find and edit JAWS functionality. Settings Center continues to use JCF files (JAWS Configuration Files) and is a direct replacement for Configuration Manager.

When editing a document using speech only, inconsistencies such as unmatched parentheses, unintentional format changes, extra whitespace, and stray or unspaced punctuation can often be missed. The new Text Analyzer feature is a tool that notifies you of these errors in your document by using a spoken message or WAV file. You can configure JAWS to announce discrepancies by count, by description, or by sound while proofreading the document by line, sentence, paragraph, or Say All command. Braille users will benefit from this, since a sound can be emitted before the user has time to read the entire line looking for errors.

Research It for the Everyday User

Research It is a new feature that provides quick access to information while also making it easy to return to your primary task. Use just a few keystrokes to look up information and display salient data in the Virtual Viewer. When you have finished researching, press another keystroke to return to the task you were performing before the research started. All that is required to use Research It is JAWS 11 and an Internet connection.

Accessible Tables Part One: Tables in Word and Ranges in Excel, Archive

People who use tables in Microsoft Word or ranges in Microsoft Excel on a regular basis know how quickly one can get lost in the maze of rows and columns without the use of row and column titles. Learn to use the bookmark feature in Word and the naming function in Excel to create built-in column and row header names for a cell or a range of cells. JAWS looks for certain specific names to identify which cells contain row and column titles. If the titles are defined in this fashion, the information is stored right in the document rather than in a JAWS file and can be used to speak the title information to anyone using JAWS 6.1 or later. Furthermore, anyone can build these row and column names into a table or range without even having JAWS installed.

Learn some easily applied principles that increase the accessibility of documents you create. In addition, learn how users can more easily access information by knowing helpful features in their adaptive technology.

You use the Keyboard Manager to control the assignment of keystrokes to JAWS screen reading activities. The Keyboard Manager stores keystroke assignments in key map files with the extension of JKM. There are two types of key map files:

Every time you start JAWS, a group of default settings or configuration files is loaded. Included in this group of files is the default script file, default.jsb, which contains all of the functionality JAWS needs to access and speak information within the Windows operating system and Windows-based programs.

Each time you press a keystroke, JAWS performs a series of steps to determine if the keystroke is associated with a script, is a keystroke that activates an action within the program you are using, or does not do anything.

In this one hour Webinar, you will learn the definition of a script and function, the differences between scripts and functions, how JAWS processes scripts and functions and more.

Script Manager, Basics of Scripting, Archive

This is a core concept Webinar for anyone who is interested in learning how to customize the JAWS screen reader through the use of the powerful scripting language. What is the Script manager in JAWS and how is it used?

You use the Script manager to create new and modify existing scripts and user-defined functions. It is a full-featured text editor that provides built-in capabilities that you will not find in other text editors and word processors. In addition, the Script manager provides hot keys you can use to read through the scripts in your script file more efficiently.

After you have completed creating your new script or function, you save your script file just as you would when using another text editor or word processor. However the Script manager automatically performs an additional step not found in those applications. It compiles your script file. Compiling a script converts the file from text to machine-readable information. The Script manager saves the original text file with a JSS (JAWS Script Source) file extension, and the compiled or binary version (machine-readable language) is saved with a JSB (JAWS Script Binary) file extension.

In this one and one-half hour Webinar, you will learn the file types used by the Script manager, the commands used to navigate through existing script files and how to view the documentation for existing scripts and user-defined functions. You will also learn how to create new scripts using the New Script dialog box, how to insert functions into scripts, check for errors that violate the rules of correct script writing, save and compile your script files, and more.
